Rita Theresa Williams, age 80, of DeTour Village died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. She was born August 13, 1927 in Hamtramck, Michigan to John Albert and Margaret L. (Sims) Winneroski.

When she was a young child, Rita's family moved to DeTour Village where she grew up and graduated from high school. She met James Pitts Williams while he was stationed in the area with the United States Coast Guard. The married on August 7, 1948 at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in DeTour Village. They lived in many places during Jim's Coast Guard career including Rita's favorites, Kodiak, Ketchikan and Sitka, Alaska, Point Sir, California, Reeds Port, Oregon, and Amherst and Avon Lake, Ohio. In August 1995, they retired to DeTour.

Rita was active in the Catholic Church in every community she lived in. She also enjoyed feeding and watching birds and wildlife in her yard and flower gardening. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Rita is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Jim; one son, William H. (Vera) Williams of Amherst, Ohio; one daughter, Kristen M. Williams of Avon Lake, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Michael, Amanda and William J. Williams, and Heather, Catherine and Rachel Sutfin. Also surviving is one sister, Margaret Gable of Drummond Island.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John Albert Winneroski and Harry Winneroski; and one sister, Mildred Pugh.

Services will be held Wednesday, February 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeTour Village. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 1 p.m.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour Township in the spring.
