One story goes that Herman was something of an outcast, unknown by his nephews and nieces. The "official" family reason for this estrangement is that, while his three brothers all became Lutheran preachers, he totally eschewed religion. The rest of the family, or, at least, his father, refused to associate with him, and his family, because of this.
