Sir Philip Courtenay, K.G., served as Admiral of the western fleet, commissioner of oyer and terminer, tax surveyor, justice of the peace, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, steward of the duchy of Cornwall, member of the King's Council, and a Knight of the Shire in the Parliaments of 1383, 1386, 1388, 1390, 1393, 1395, 1399, and 1401.

Husband of Anne, daughter of Sir Thomas Wake of Blisworth, by his wife Alice Pateshulle.

At his death his estate passed to his son Richard Courtenay, bishop of Norwich until his death in 1415, then to Philip's next heir, his grandson Philip, son of his deceased son John, who was to become Sir Philip Courtenay of Powderham (1404-1463).
