Arriving on the banks of the lower Loire at the beginning of the 10th century, he would be of high Franco-Burgundian extraction, related to the bosonid Hugues of Arles, who became king of Italy, and to his father Thibaud of Arles. He is the founder of the Thibaldiens dynasty.

He married Richilde de Bourges, also known as Richilde du Maine ((c.890-† ap.942), daughter of Roger du Maine and Rothilde (c.871-c.928), daughter of Charles the Bald and Richilde of Ardennes).
