Son and heir to Sir William Roos, Knight of Bath, 6th Lord Roos of Helmsley and Margaret de Arundel, daughter of Sir John Arundel, Lord Arundel.

First husband of Margery le Despenser, daughter of Sir Philip Despenser and Elizabeth Tibetot. They were married by dispensation for consanguinity dated 13 Sept 1404 and had no children.

Sir John was present at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415 and at the Siege of Rouen 1417 to 1419, after which was was granted the castle and lordship of Barcquesville. John also took part in the siege of Muelen in 1420.

Sir John was slain at the Battle of Beauge in Anjou 22 March 1421, and buried in Belvoir Priory. His widow, Margery, would marry Roger Wentworth.

The family surname is found both Ros and Roos.
