Raymond Fountain

Raymond James Fountain, 84, of Pickford, Michigan died Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at his home. He was born September 6, 1920 in Pickford to James William and Ella (Rapson) Fountain.

Ray served in the United States Army during World War II. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in connection with military operation against the enemy on December 3, 1944 in France. He also received a Purple Heart after he was wounded in action on February 4, 1945. On September 29, 1945, two weeks after returning home, he married Della June Hancock in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. They had met shortly before he entered the service. A lifelong area resident, Ray worked construction for many years on projects including the Mackinac Bridge, International Bridge, Soo Line Railroad Bridge, Kincheloe Air Force Base, Neebish Rock Cut and Poe Lock. In early years, he worked as a laborer and in later years, as a foreman. Ray then worked at the Cedarville Limestone Quarry, retiring after working there for 20 years. He was also a farmer who raised cattle, milk cows, pigs and chickens.

Ray enjoyed deer hunting and playing checkers with his grandchildren. He loved camping with his family and friends and had many memorable outings with them.

Ray is survived by Della, his loving wife of nearly 60 years; one daughter, Charlotte (Ernest) Bruning of Cedarville; one daughter-in-law, Kathryn Fountain of Pickford; six grandchildren, Dean (Toni) Bruning, Drew Bruning, Elli (Dan) Lasley, Richard (friend, Mona) Fountain, Randy (Tricia) Fountain and Ryan (Kerry) Fountain; and eight great grandchildren, Dakota Swinton Bruning, Tyler Fountain, Austin Bruning, Shelby Lasley, Zachary Lasley, Emma Fountain, Luke Fountain and Saige Bruning. Also surviving are four sisters, Ruby (Roy) Mannikko of Watton, Michigan, Wilma (John) Linberg of San Lorenzo, California, Jean (Bob) Wylie of Canyon Country, California and Glenda (Howard) Penwitt of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ray was preceded in death by his son, Richard James Fountain; three sisters, Margaret Bosley, Orma Spillene and Reva Fountain; and one brother, Glen Fountain.

Visitation will be Friday, August 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford. Funeral services will be Saturday, August 20 at 11 a.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Gruenberg officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Pickford Township.
