Subject: Query: John Pennington, b.1781, d. 1866

James was the son of John and Ann Wakely Pennington. He was born in Cornwall, England in August 1854. He had four brothers: John, Thomas, William and Charles and one sister Margaret. The family operated a stone grist mill in the Western area of England: Clovelly, Bucks, and Bideford. The sons left and traveled back and forth to England, working their way, before settling in Canada. There is a possibility that shipping was involved. James' brother John owned a furniture factory in Canada and was quite wealthy. Margaret stayed in England and cared for thier parents until they died, she then came to the Sault. She married Thomas Hare and they had on son Cyril. They were supposed to be on the Titanic but Cyril got sick so they waited for the next voyage. James came to the United States in 1876 with two of his brothers. James and Charles farmed and settled in Pickford, MI. Charles first wife Melinda Davey died in 1899. Charles went back to England and married Mary Jane Dunn, and returned to the same farm he had left. His granddaughter still lives on Pennington Rd. in Pickford, MI.

James met Margaret Watson in Canada st the Sault St. Marie where she was working as a waitress at the Locks. The couple married and had four children: Thomas John (my grandfather), the oldest, born January 8, 1886 and died October 16, 1979; Ivy, Anna, and Tillie. They all lived to be 93 years old. James died in 1928 of consumption. He is buried at the cemetery in Sault ST. Marie, MI.
