Sir John Hill is the earliest recorded ancestor of the Hills of Devon. He was born at Hills-Court in Exeter, Devon.
John Hill was Recorder of Exeter in 1379, was made King's Serjeant-in-Law in 1382 by King Richard II, and served as Justice of King's Bench from 1389 to 1407.
Sir John was knighted during the reign of King Henry IV
John Hill died, June 24 1408, and was buried in St John Baptist's Priory, Exeter; his 2 wives were buried there as well; His will was probated July 8 1408.
Sir John Hill, Serjeant-in-Law, Justice of King's Bench, married twice:
His 1st wife was Denise (Denyse, or Dionisia) Durborough, daughter of John Durborough of Heathfield
John was her 3rd husband, Denise was twice widowed. Her 1st husband was Martin Langdon and her 2nd husband was Robert Challons of Challonsleigh, Devon (by whom she had a son Ralph)
John and Denise's children were:
- Joan Hill, married Sir John Mallet
- Henry (Maurice) Hill
- Robert Hill of Spaxton, Sheriff of Somerset m. Isabel Fychet

Denise died before 1392 and John married a 2nd time.

John's 2nd wife (as her 2nd husband) was Maud (Matilda) Daubeny of Barrington (died 21 April 1416) daughter of Giles Daubeny of Barrington d.1386. and widow of Sir Henry Percehay of Chalsfield, Baron of Exchequer, who died in 1380

The children of John and Maud were:
- John Hill d Oct 23 1427
- Ralph Hill of Houndstone m. Edith Mode (Moody) of Gloster
- Elizabeth nun Buckland Minchin Somerset
- Margaret

Maud survived John and married a 3rd time to Sir Robert Latymer of Duntish. Maud died herself in 1416 and was buried next to John Hill at St John Baptist's Priory in Exeter.

"The Worthies of Devon" by John Price makes a point to specify that Sir Robert Hill, Kt, one of the justices of the court of Common-Pleas, also known as Sir Robert Hill of Shilston, was NOT of the family of Hill's-Court, was NOT the son of Justice John Hill of Hills-Court.

Sir John Hill married twice:

Firstly to Dyonesia Durburgh, daughter of Sir John Durburgh and widow of Sir John Malet, eldest son of Sir Baldwin Malet of Enmore, Somerset. By Dyonesia Durborough he had children including:
Robert Hill (c.1361-1423) of Spaxton in Somerset, four times MP for Somerset, in 1414, 1415, 1416 and 1419. From 1402 to 1404, Robert Hill was steward of the Dunster Castle estates of Joan, Lady Mohun, after whose death he retained close connections with the new lord of Dunster, Sir Hugh Luttrell (d.1428), his co-MP for Somerset in 1414 and 1415, and of whose will he was an executor.Margaret Hill, wife of William Harington, 5th Baron Harington (c.1394\endash 1458), brother of John Harington, 4th Baron Harington(d.1418) husband of Elizabeth Courtenay(d.1471), daughter of Edward de Courtenay, 3rd Earl of Devon(d.1419).

Thirdly in about 1408 to John Luttrell (died c.1421) of Carhampton, Somerset, MP for Barnstaple in 1406,[7] Constable of Dunster Castle 1408-1421 for his Luttrell kinsman, feoffee for Hugh de Courtenay, 4th/12th Earl of Devon (1389\endash 1422) and trustee of the Devon and Cornwall estates of his brother-in-law John, Lord Harrington.

John next married Maud DAUBENEY, daughter of Giles DAUBENEY and Alianore DE WILLINGTON, in 1389.
