Dorothy Mae Bell, age 82, of Sault Ste. Marie passed away at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey on October 20, 2003. Dorothy was born in Rudyard on March 12, 1921, the eldest daughter of George and Mildred (McDowell) Leach.
She grew up in Pickford, attending school and graduating from Pickford High School in 1938. After graduation, Dorothy attended Marquette Beauty Academy in Marquette where she received her certificate in Cosmetology. Dorothy owned and operated a beauty shop on Seymour Street in Sault Ste. Marie for 27 years. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church and the Rebecca Lodge. Dorothy enjoyed boating, bowling, golfing and spending time with her many friends.
Dorothy is survived by one brother, Vern (Pearl) Leach of Pickford; three sisters: Esther Waybrandt and Mildred (Kermith) Hanna of Pickford and Ruby (Lyle) Crawford of Sault Ste. Marie; one daughter-in-law, Georgia Jacobson of Flint; and one sister-in-law, Nettie Leach of Frazier. Dorothy is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roylance Jacobson, in 1957; her second husband, Howard Bell, in 1988; her beloved son, Larry Jacobson, in 1991; and three brothers: Ivan, Elwin, and Howard Leach.
Visitation for Dorothy Bell will be held at Hovie Funeral Home on Thursday, October 23 from 4 to 8 p.m. with the Rebecca Lodge having services at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church on Friday, October 24, at 2 p.m. with one hour of visitation prior to the funeral. Officiating the service will be Reverend Sidney Reed. Burial will be in the Cottle Cemetery in Pickford.
Memorials may be left to the First Baptist Church of Sault. Ste. Marie.
