He was reputed to be the youngest man called out at the "False Alarm" in 1804 and the Yeomanry of which he was a member assembled at Dalkieth. **

He was one of the founder members of The Wisp Club in 1826 at Mosspaul along with his brother-in-law, Robert Elliot of Teinside. The club held an annual dinner on the Friday after the Dumfries Spring Horse Market and set prices for cattle, sheep and wool until about 1858. ***
